Our courteous staff is here to provide you the best medical care possible. We have included information about our staff so that we may build a more comprehensive relationship with our patients.


Cardiovascular Imaging Center – Our center, which we commonly refer to as the CVIC, employs a staff of 13 dedicated team members. We strive to provide the highest quality diagnostic services with state-of-the-art equipment in a comfortable and caring environment. Our team consists of 3 receptionists, 2 nuclear medicine technologists, 4 ultrasound technologists, 1 vascular technician, 2 cardiac technicians, and 1 transcriptionist.

Cardiology

Edward V. Bonyak, M.D.

Dr. Bonyak received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He completed medical school at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 1989. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia in 1992, and completed a fellowship in cardiology at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in 1996, serving as Chief Fellow during the final year of fellowship. He served as a faculty member in the department of internal medicine at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center from 1992 to 1993.


Dr. Bonyak is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Association. He has been board certified in internal medicine since 1992, cardiovascular medicine since 1996, and interventional cardiology since 2000.


Dr. Bonyak joined the Winchester Cardiology & Internal Medicine group in July 1996. He offers cardiovascular services in consultative cardiology, cardiac catheterization and intervention, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and stress echocardiography. Peripheral vascular ultrasound interpretation will be offered beginning in February 2002.

J. Dixon Brown, M.D.

Dr. Brown received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975. He received his medical degree from Penn State at Hershey in 1979. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1984. He is a Fellow of The American College of Cardiology.


Dr. Brown has been practicing cardiology at Winchester Cardiology since 1984. He is currently board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology.


Dr. Brown provides a wide range of cardiology services, including the implantation of both permanent and biventricular pacemakers for heart failure, as well as echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, nuclear stress testing, angioplasty, including cutting balloons and stents, diagnostic cardiac catheterization, rotablator and directional atherectomy procedures, intravascular ultrasound and pressure wire assessment of coronary physiology. In addition, he practices general cardiology, including management of lipids, internal defibrillators and pacemakers.

Frederic T. Farra, M.D.

Dr. Farra received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in 1972 and his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1977. He served his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Maryland and Baltimore VA Hospitals from 1977-1980. His fellowship in cardiology was completed at the Milton Hershey Medical Center of Penn State University in 1982.


Dr. Farra joined Winchester Cardiology & Internal Medicine, Inc. in 1988 after being in private practice in Tennessee for six years. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. He specializes in invasive and noninvasive procedures including cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty and stenting, rotational atherectomy, pacemaker implantation, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology.

Melanie D. Mattson, M.D.

Dr. Mattson received her undergraduate degree from Northeast Louisiana University and her medical degree from Louisiana State University in 1987. She served her internship and residency in internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk, VA from 1987-1990. She was a fellow in cardiology at the University of Kentucky from 1990-1993. She was in a group practice in Lexington, Kentucky prior to joining Winchester Cardiology & Internal Medicine, Inc.


Dr. Mattson joined Winchester Cardiology & Internal Medicine, Inc. in July 1994. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiology. She provides a full range of cardiology services including cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty and stenting, transesophageal echocardiography, and stress echocardiography.


Dr. Mattson is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American College of Chest Physicians.

Trisha B. Nashed, M.D.

Dr. Nashed received her undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Miami. She completed medical school in 1997. She did her Internship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond from 1997-2000. She continued at the Medical College of Virginia to do fellowship training in cardiology.


Dr. Nashed joined Winchester Cardiology and Internal Medicine in July 2003. She is certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She specializes in invasive and noninvasive procedures including cardiac catherization, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology as well as clinical and critical care medicine.


Dr. Nashed is a member of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

A picture of Dr. John C. Quinn.
John C. Quinn, M.D.

Dr. Quinn received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1968 and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in 1972. He served an internship in internal medicine at Emory University from 1972-1973. He was a resident in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia from 1973-1975. He was a Fellow in cardiology at MCV from 1975-1977. Following his fellowship, he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at MCV from 1977-1979.


Dr. Quinn was the first board certified cardiologist to practice in Winchester. He joined 110 Lee Street, Ltd., now Winchester Cardiology & Internal Medicine, Inc., in 1979 and started the first cardiac catheterization lab in Winchester. He specializes in invasive and non-invasive cardiology procedures which include cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty, coronary stenting and echocardiography.


Dr. Quinn is past Governor of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Cardiology, Medical Society of Virginia, American College of Physicians, and the American Heart Association.


Dr. Quinn is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease.

A picture of Dr. James T. Rittelmeyer.
James T. Rittelmeyer, M.D.

Dr. Rittelmeyer was raised in McLean, Virginia and graduated form Langley High School in 1969. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1974 with a B.S. in Chemistry and Georgetown University Medical School in 1978. His residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiology were completed at the Naval Hospital in San Diego in 1983. During the next 4 years he served as Director of the Electrophysiology Lab and Director of the Coronary Care Unit at the Naval Hospital. Since being discharged from the Navy in 1987 he has been in private practice in the specialty of Cardiology. He has been a member of Winchester Cardiology and Internal Medicine since 1989.


He has been involved in the evaluation and treatment of complex arrhythmias for his entire professional career and has a special interest in pacemaker and defibrillator implantation and follow-up. His practice in interventional cardiology began in the early 1980’s. He has been involved with stent implantation since they were first approved by the FDA. He was a principal investigator in a large thrombolytic study (Gusto) that was a landmark study in the treatment of acute MI (heart attack).


Dr. Rittelmeyer has an interest in education and frequently has Family Practice residents rotate with him. He frequently speaks to Family Practitioners and General Internists on updates in Cardiology. His areas of interest include treating patients with pacemakers, defibrillators, congestive heart failure, chest pain, heart attack, complex arrhythmia, and cardiac intervention (balloons and stents).


Dr. Rittelmeyer is board certified in Internal Medicine (1981), Cardiology (1983) and Interventional Cardiology (1999).

A picture of Dr. James G. Warner, Jr.
James G. Warner, Jr., M.D., Ed.D.

Dr. Warner received his Master’s degree and a Doctor of Education in exercise physiology prior to entering medical school. He completed medical school at West Virginia University in 1989. He completed his residency in internal medicine at University of Virginia in 1992, followed by a fellowship in cardiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1995. He served as a faculty member in the Section of Cardiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine from 1995-1999.


Board certified in cardiology since 1995, Dr. Warner is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of the Epidemiology Section of the American Heart Association, and a member of The American Society of Echocardiography. He is a past President of the Forsyth County, North Carolina Division of The American Heart Association.


Dr. Warner has been an author or co-author in over twenty peer-reviewed medical journals as well as a co-author of two book chapters. He has made presentations at several national cardiology meetings.


Dr. Warner joined the Winchester Cardiology and Internal Medicine group in July 1999. In addition to cardiology consultation, he provides cardiovascular services including cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, carotid ultrasound, and peripheral vascular ultrasound.

Internal Medicine

William C. Brink, M.D.

Dr. William Brink received a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. Subsequently, he graduated from medical school at Temple University with honors in 1993. He completed his residency in internal medicine at University of Virginia in 1996, and has been working at Winchester Cardiology & Internal Medicine, Inc. since that time.


Dr. Brink is board certified in internal medicine and serves as an active member of the American College of Physicians. He also serves as assistant professor of internal medicine at University of Virginia and is active in teaching medical students from the University of Virginia, as well as Doctor of Pharmacy students from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.


In addition to seeing general internal medicine patients, Dr. Brink also has a special interest in hypertension, preventive cardiology and hepatology.


Community involvement includes volunteer work at the Free Medical Clinic of Northern Shenandoah Valley, in addition to volunteering as physician for various high school sports programs.


Dr. Brink and his wife, Cathy, have three children, Evan, Joseph and Julia, and they reside in Winchester, Virginia.

Gayland O. Hethcoat, M.D., Pharm. D.

Dr. Hethcoat joined Winchester Cardiology and Internal Medicine, Inc. in June 2002. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN, in 1982. He attended Mercer University School of Pharmacy in Atlanta, GA and graduated with a Pharmacy degree in 1985. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Mercer University School of Medicine (Macon, GA) in 1993. He completed a Metabolic/Nutritional Support residency at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA and Internal Medicine residency at the University of Tennessee (Chattanooga, TN) Erlanger Medical Centerhttp://www.erlanger.org/. He has been board certified in Internal Medicine since 1996.


Dr. Hethcoat is an active member of the American College of Physicians and American Society of Internal Medicine.


Dr. Hethcoat practices general internal medicine with special interest in cardiovascular risk management, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic/nutritional support. He provides outpatient and inpatient care.

Douglas B. Keim, M.D.

Dr. Keim graduated from medical school at the University of Virginia in 1994. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia in 1997 and received board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine the same year.


Dr. Keim is a member of the American College of Physicians since 1998, as well as the American Diabetes Association.


Dr. Keim joined Winchester Cardiology and Internal Medicine in July, 1997. His particular interests include diabetes and thyroid disease. He is able to provide services including stress testing and carotid ultrasonography.

Frederick H. Kozlowski, M.D.

Dr. Kozlowski joined Winchester Cardiology and Internal Medicine, Inc. in July 1997. He completed his bachelor's degree in Biology at the University of Scranton in 1990. He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1994, and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia Health Science center in June 1997. He has been board certified in Internal Medicine since 1997.


Dr. Kozlowski has been an active member of the American College of Physicians - American Society of Internal Medicine since 1994. He holds an Associate Clinical Professor position in the department of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia. He remains active in teaching medical, pharmacy and physician assistant students.


Dr. Kozlowski practices general internal medicine with special interest in cardiology, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes and hypertension. He provides outpatient as well as inpatient care.

Andrew E. Schwentker, M.D.

Dr. Andrew Schwentker joined Winchester Cardiology in July 2000. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree at Williams College in Massachusetts. He attended medical school at Penn State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.


Dr. Schwentker has extensive research experience in the fields of stroke and heart attack at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He is board certified in internal medicine and has interest and experience in a wide range of adult medical problems.


Dr. Schwentker, his wife Mary, and their dog Elvis, reside with their horses near Winchester.

Edward P. Smith, M.D.

Dr. Ed Smith received his bachelor's degree in biology from Providence College in 1985. Subsequently, he completed medical school training at Georgetown University in 1990.


He also served his internship and residency at Georgetown University Hospital.


After serving his residency, he worked for Northern Virginia Doctors Hospital.


Dr. Smith is a member of the American College of Physicians, as well as the American Medical Association. He joined Winchester Cardiology and Internal Medicine, Inc. in the fall of 1995.


He lives in Frederick County with his wife, two children and the family dog.
